For this month’s Test Kitchen and the next two, I will be making recipes from HelloFresh, the online food delivery service. I tried the service for once week, which included three meals.
The process starts by visiting the website and selecting the date you want your service to start and choosing from six recipes you want for the week.
When the package arrived at my door, I was impressed by how organized it was. There were three labeled boxes, each containing pre-measured ingredients for a meal. There were two large ice packs at the bottom. The meat was stored in-between them. I almost didn’t see the meat.
Each meal has a recipe card, explaining in detail how to prepare the meal, and it includes estimated time, nutritional information and cooking level.
This Creamy Prosciutto Panini with fresh mozzarella cheese, basil and green salad was for a level 1 cook and was estimated to take 30 minutes to prepare. It wasn’t that hard to cook, but it took me about an hour from beginning to end.
Overall, I think Hello Fresh is a great option for people who love to cook but hate the hassle of thinking of recipes and shopping for ingredients. It’s not a good option if you don’t like preparing a complicated main dish with a complicated side dish. And it’s definitely not for busy people who like quick meals.
If you already know how to quickly slice and dice ingredients and you know you’re comfortable with a lot of moving parts at once, then HelloFresh would be very convenient for you. I thought it was a lot of work for a mediocre return. The food was fresh and tasty, but in my opinion, it was not worth all the work. We’ll see how the next two meals go.
